A leprechaun (Irish: leipreachán) is a type of fairy in Irish folklore, usually taking the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat, who enjoys partaking in mischief. Like other fairy creatures, leprechauns have been linked to the Tuatha Dé Danann of Irish mythology. The Leprechauns spend all their time busily making shoes, and store away all their coins in a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If ever captured by a human, the Leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for their release. Popular depiction shows the Leprechaun as being no taller than a small child, with a beard and hat, although they may originally have been perceived as the tallest of the mound-dwellers.

March 17th is Saint Patrick's Day, when the death of St. Patrick, or St. Patrick, who is the patron saint of Ireland is commemorated. In the United States Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated in style because many Americans are of Irish origin. Today it is celebrated by almost anyone, whether or not Irish ancestry.
March 17 marks the day of St. Patrick, patron of Ireland. St. Patrick was born in 387 in Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland. His father was an officer in the Roman army. Irish pirates took prisoner the young Patrick 16 and sold him into slavery. He spent six years in Ireland, where he learned to speak the Celtic language. He managed to escape and went to France to prepare for the monastic life, and became a priest. When he was 46 years old he decided to return to Ireland to evangelize the locals. And there he remained for almost three decades, until his death on March 17 of the year 461.
